What if Nova Scotia became a province where planting trees was simply part of how we put nature first?
Our forests do far more than provide beautiful places to enjoy. Trees and forests help regulate our climate, store carbon, protect soil and water, provide habitat for wildlife, support biodiversity and create healthier communities.
And we need more of them.
As we face a changing climate and growing pressures on nature, planting, growing and protecting trees is one way each of us can help create a healthier, more resilient Nova Scotia.
Put Down Roots
Putting Down Roots is a new initiative within Nature Nova Scotia's Culture Change Initiative – Putting Nature First.
It is an invitation to create a culture where Nova Scotians see planting trees not simply as something we should do, but something we want to do - for nature, wildlife, our communities and generations to come. Imagine thousands of Nova Scotians planting and caring for trees in their yards, communities, schools, farms, parks and woodlots.
One tree may seem small. Together, they can change the landscape.
Plant for the Future
Ask yourself:
“What can I plant today that will give something back to nature for generations to come?”
Plant for wildlife and biodiversity.
Plant to protect water and soil.
Plant to help our communities adapt to climate change.
Plant for shade, beauty and connection.
Plant because we are part of nature.
And remember: protecting the trees we already have is just as important as planting new ones.
A Culture Begins With Us
Start where you are.
Plant one tree. Protect an existing tree. Help restore a small patch of forest. Encourage your school, workplace, community or neighbour to put down roots.
Then invite someone else to join you.
When individual choices become shared values and actions, culture begins to change.
Putting Down Roots is an invitation to grow something bigger than a tree—habitat, biodiversity, climate resilience, connection and hope.
