Putting Nature First invites us to make a simple shift in perspective: from seeing nature as something around us to recognizing it as something we belong to. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we grow, and the places that bring us peace, wonder, and belonging all remind us that our well-being is inseparable from the health of the natural world. This culture change initiative encourages Nova Scotians to pause, reflect, and rediscover that connection.
Rather than asking people to choose between nature and progress, it invites us to explore how both people and nature can flourish together. By nurturing a deeper sense of gratitude, belonging, and shared stewardship, we can create a culture where caring for nature becomes a natural expression of caring for one another. In doing so, we strengthen the lands and waters we love while helping create a healthier, more resilient future for generations to come.

Complete one or more of the input surveys below or send us a short video or photo capturing the place, wildlife, or moment that makes you feel most connected to nature. Whether it's a playful fox, a favourite hiking trail, a spectacular sunset, a funny event, or your backyard birds, your story can inspire others to discover, appreciate, and protect the wild spaces we all cherish.
Together, let's celebrate the beauty of Nova Scotia - one story at a time.
The contest will run between September 1st 2026 through February 14th, 2027.
Here is a list of our current prizes: (for best photo, best video and richest inputs on the three surveys)
- a $ 200.00 gift certificate to the Wooden Monkey restaurant in Dartmouth.
- a $ 200.00 gift certificate to the Wooden Monkey restaurant in Halifax.
- a $ 750.00 gift certificate for a resiliency mindset assessment from Peak Experiences - The Learning Company.
- a $ 200.00 gift certificate for a tree basket (diversity of native trees) from the North Nova Forest Owners Co-op greenhouse.
- more prizes to come... we are working on securing:
- a $ 750.00 gift certificate to a visit to a nature lodge in Nova Scotia (location to be announced)
- a $ 600.00 for a full day outback fishing trip / guide experiences on a heritage river in Nova Scotia (to be announced)

Rules:
- The contest is open to residents of Nova Scotia. Participants under 18 must have permission from a parent or guardian.
- All photos and videos must be your own original work and taken in Nova Scotia.
- Enter as many times as you like by completing one of the five "input" areas - simply ensure each entry is unique.
Permission to Share:
By entering, you grant Nature Nova Scotia permission to share your submission, with appropriate credit, on its website, social media, and other promotional materials related to the initiative.
