PNF Movement Idea # 4:
Habitats for Life
Growing, Protecting and Restoring the Habitats that Sustain Us - Forest and Marine.
in Collaboration with the North Nova Forest Owners Cooperative
Restoration & Greenhouse Initiative & TBA (Marine)
Nature Champion: TBA
What if Nova Scotia became a province where growing, protecting and restoring our forest and marine habitats were simply part of how we put nature first?
Our forests and coastal waters do far more than offer beautiful places to explore. From deep woods to rich marine ecosystems, they regulate our climate, store carbon, safeguard soil and shores, and sustain diverse wildlife and provide much of our foods - helping keeps our people and communities resilient.
And we need to safeguard more of them.
As we face a changing climate and rising pressures on nature, protecting, restoring, and growing our habitats - from canopy to coast - is a vital way each of us can help secure a healthy, thriving Nova Scotia.
Restoration greenhouse’ offers seedlings – and hope – for restoring degraded lands and woodlands in Nova Scotia
Habitats for Life
Habitats for Life is a new initiative within Nature Nova Scotia's Culture Change Initiative – Putting Nature First.
It is an invitation to build a culture where Nova Scotians see caring for our forests, coastlines, and waters not as an obligation, but as a shared passion—for nature, wildlife, our communities, and generations to come. Imagine thousands of people planting native trees, restoring coastal buffers, protecting watersheds, and stewarding wild spaces across our yards, communities, schools, farms, and shorelines.
One tree or shoreline project may seem small. Together, they safeguard an entire province.
Steward for the Future Ask yourself:
“What can I plant, restore, or protect today that will give back to nature for generations to come?”
-
Plant and protect for wildlife, marine life, and biodiversity.
-
Restore and steward to shield our waters, coasts, and soil.
-
Act to help our land and ocean ecosystems adapt to climate change.
-
Care for the shade, clean water, natural beauty, and deep connection they provide.
-
Protect because we are an interconnected part of nature—from canopy to coast.
And remember: safeguarding the forests, wetlands, and marine habitats we already have is just as vital as restoring new ones.
A Culture Begins With Us
Start where you are.
Plant a native tree. Protect a coastal buffer. Restore a patch of forest, wetland, or shoreline. Encourage your school, workplace, or community to take root and care for our waters.
Then invite someone else to join you.
When individual choices become shared values and collective action, culture shifts.
Habitats for Life is an invitation to grow something far greater than a single tree or shoreline - it is about nurturing vibrant ecosystems, boosting biodiversity, building climate resilience, and deepening our connection to the land and sea.
Grow Nature. Protect the Wild.
Together, let's make stewardships—from canopy to coast—part of what it means to put nature first in Nova Scotia.
